Conjugation
1. Conjugation is the transfer of genetic material from one bacterium to the other by Plasmids.
2. Plasmids are extra chromosomal genetic elements.
3. This is the major way in which bacteria-particularly enterobacteria, acquire additional genes.
4. Maleness and donor status is determined by the presence of plasmid coding for pilus.
5. Plasmid DNA is transferred from donor to recipient bacterium by direct contact, probably via a hollow-cored tube formed by a sex pilus.
6. Recipient attains donor status & in turn conjugates with other female cells .
7. Portion of host DNA from donor carried with plasmid combines with recipient DNA to form Genetic recombination.
8. The plasmid responsible –Sex factor or fertility(F)factor.
Eg:- Multi Drug Resistance Shigella & Salmonella (RTF).
